Fifth European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns
Taking the Commitments to the Streets

The Spirit of Sevilla, president D'Alessio has his say

"After the last years characterized by a lack of enthusiasm, due also to getting used to certain kind of thematic, I have been testimony to a general revitalisation.

The Conference has been the occasion for presenting new methodologies and tools aiming at concrete finalisation and real outputs by local authorities.

Over 1.700 delegates from European local governments have gathered in Sevilla. Remarkable the participation of representatives from Scandinavia and northern Europe. From the Meditteranean area a confirm, especially from Spain and Italy.

Important signals of interest from the Balkans: there are countries here facing a fast growing economic development and exposed to environmental and social risks; it is the time to manage and not to undergo the changes."

  •  ITALY for SUSTAINABILITY
Italy for sustainability is the stand jointly realized by Italian Local Agenda 21 Association, Ministry of Environment and APAT, the Italian Environment Protection Agency.

The stand is a showcase of the many initiatives and activities towards sustainability carried out by the net of Italian Local Authorities.

The Italian "headquarters" is also the place where to meet other delegates, start new relations, discuss the presentations. The staff of Italian LA21 Association is there to help, also for less technical requests.

Cities and towns as main global actors for a sustainable development
The Fifth European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns begins at the presence of the Spanish Minister for the Environment and of more than 1.700 delegates from all over Europe and other countries.

After the plenary session the Conference streems in parallel sessions, roundtables, and other events, forcing the delegates to rapid shifts from one room to the other in order to take part at the many presentations on the Aalborg Commitments and to learn from local succes cases and challenges faced.

In any case for all the delegates that were in Sevilla and for everyone that couldn't come these are the websites from where it is possible to download all the conference documents.

  •  Happy Birthday, Coordinamento!
Everything started here in Seville, 1999.

The comment of Eriuccio Nora, director of the Italian Local Agenda 21 Association: "The idea to start a Coordination Office of the Local Authorities engaged with Local Agenda 21 has arisen here in Seville in 1999 at the Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Sustainable Cities and Towns.

In that occasion there were 40 delegates from Italy; this year there are more than 250 and more than 400 are the members of our association."

A very good occasion to invite everyone at the stand Italy for sustainability and celebrate with an aperitivo based on local products from Emilia and Andalusia!
